Ed Jones is a playable character in State of Decay and is introduced at the beginning of the game. He is an unlockable hero in Breakdown.

Ed is on a fishing trip with his friend Marcus Campbell and the pair are being attacked by zombies when the game begins. He is not playable until later in the game.

He is with Marcus when they encounter and rescue Maya Torres. Ed explains to her that the pair were on their annual fishing trip before "people resorted to cannibalism". Later, Ed is mauled by the reanimated Thomas Ritter at the Ranger Station and is severely injured. Ed was checking Thomas' body for ID before he was attacked. He later reveals he had taken a radio and truck keys from Thomas' body and the group is able to make contact with Lily Ritter and leave Mt.Tanner.

Due to his injury, the player will need to find medication for Ed and generate a mission to find a location with supplies ('Lay of the Land") and one to gather them ("The Vet Clinic"). Afterwards, Ed will become playable if he is healed with the help of Doc Hanson (he will need to be found and protected in "The Old Farmhouse" mission), otherwise he can die and remain unplayable.

State of Decay: Breakdown

In Breakdown, Ed is known as "The Friend".

  • Will be shot in his sleep by Alan Gunderson if Marcus, Maya, or any other playable survivor rescued are killed before he is healed. The event will state "the new group we brought in didn't last, but I'm glad we tried to help them".
